Bunche Beach Preserve Birding

Audubon of Southwest Florida has committed to help maintain Bunche Beach. We meet regularly to clean up trash and do a little birding. For additional information contact Laura Wewerka

Bunche Beach Preserve -- Directions: Located at the southern end of John Morris Road. John Morris Rd. is 2.8 miles southwest from the Sanibel Causeway toll plaza on Summerlin Rd. and Bunche Beach is 1.2 miles further south off of Summerlin. Bunche Beach, now that Lee County has bought it and thus has begun to enforce it's "no dog" policy, is a wonderful place to see hundreds of waders and particularly shorebirds (mostly in winter.) A low or rising tide is best. All five plovers can be seen here as well as Marbled Godwit, Whimbrel, Roseate Spoonbill, Black Skimmer, peeps, and if you're lucky, Long-billed Curlew, Common Loon (in winter) and American White Pelican. Reddish Egrets are common. Rarities have included Surf Scoter and Pomerine Jaegar. A real gem for locals and often overlooked by visiting birders. [Map]

The Great Florida Birding Trail (GFBT) is a collection of sites throughout Florida selected for their excellent birdwatching or bird education opportunities.
